The math program consists of five strands:

  1. Whole Group Challenges: These are activities that require students to use mathematical thinking and skills at their level to solve various problems. We will examine a range of problem solving strategies:
  2. Weekly Math concept development from Primary Mathematics. Children work through concepts and activities at their own pace.
  3. Tables/basic facts practice activities.
  4. SRA Math lab to develop skills in computation with the four processes and numeration.
  5. Mathletics: An internet based math curriculum that children work on at their own level both at school and home.

Whole Group Problem solving strategies:

  1. Invent a board game to help learn the 7X table.
  2. Make two cylinders from an A4 sheet. Roll up two different ways. Which one has the greatest volume?
  3. Make a bridge using a sheet of newspaper that will support a texta.
  4. Enlarging a drawing using a grid.
  5. Family ages and calculations using them.
  6. Flat boxes. Nets of rectangular prisms.
  7. Squiggle pictures. Using only 4 colours, shade a picture so that no shapes of the same colour are touching.
  8. Shapes on a grid. Does your hand have the same area as your foot. Measuring using square centimeters.
  9. Swimming fish & symmetrical patterns.

Tables/basic facts practice activities:

There will be a facts practice activity to develop speed and accuracy with tables and number facts. Students will keep a record of time, accuracy and number done to see how they improve. There will be direct teaching activities to ensure they learn these facts. Games like bingo will be played to practice and learn them. Once a week students will do calculator based activities to develop math concepts and problem solving skills.

SRA Math lab to develop skills in computation with the four processes and numeration:

Students will also work independently from the SRA Math Lab each week to develop skills in the 4 processes and other areas of mathematics. This involves pretests to find out which areas they need help with and post tests to ensure they have learnt a concept before proceeding to the next one.

For homework students will complete a week of mental math activities and practice number facts to develop speed and accuracy.

From observation of all these activities, individual needs and areas needing skill development or further teaching will be recorded and taught on an individual basis.

Mathletics:

Student activities will be monitored and set so that they complete certain areas according to their level and grade. The games option will only be used when students have completed the necessary concept development work in Mathletics.
