Topic: Cultural Diversity

  1. Provide examples of similarities and differences in the ways diverse groups address human needs and concerns.
  2. Explore how experiences might be interpreted differently by people from diverse cultural perspectives and frames of reference.
  3. Describe how people's basic needs are met in a variety of cultures.
  4. Compare the roles of individuals in communities (e.g. government leaders, religious leaders, health care workers, volunteers).
  5. Identify the groups to which students belong and the effects these groups have on their attitudes, beliefs and behaviors.

Learning Activities:

  1. Mind Map of Culture. What is culture?
  2. Make a chart/concept map to show all the groups you belong to as an individual with "Groups I Belong To" as the centre.
  3. Explore different countries and cultural practices in: Fiji, Russia, Jamaica, India Japan, South Africa, Greece, and Finland.
  4. Make a travel brochure for one of the countries showing many aspects of the culture.
  5. Cook one dish from a recipe from each of the countries each week.
  6. Make and update a weekly blog at www.gaggle.net/blog/culturaldiversity for each country.
  7. Research information under certain categories for each country for uploading to the blog.
  8. Prepare a luncheon of foods from all the countries studied and present brochures and some aspects of the countries studied.
